The passing of popular Nollywood actor, Alex Ekubo, has thrown the industry into a state of mourning. His colleagues and fans are finding it hard to comprehend his death, which happened on May 11, 2026, after a two year battle with liver cancer.
The deceased, who died at age 40, was a jovial entertainer who valued his family and fondly shared interesting moments with them. He has been away from public eyes for a while which caused some of his fans to express worry about his disappearance from social media.
His death was a rude shock to the Nigerian film industry as several practitioners trooped to social media to disclose their relationship with the late movie star. According to some notable actresses such as Kate Henshaw and Funke Akindele, they reached out to Ekubo but he maintained that he was fine.
For Kate Henshaw, she didn’t get much responses from the deceased and she felt he simply wanted to be on his own. Although he lost the battle to liver cancer on May 11, the news went viral on social media on May 12.
Ekubo, born on April 10, 1986, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, is an indigene of Arochukwu, Abia State. Some of the movies he featured in were Fate of Alakada, Sugar Rush, Weekend Getaway, Merry Men: The Real Yoruba Demons, and Blazing Heart, among others.
Beyond his ability to interpret roles, Ekubo was blessed with good looks which caused some of his female fans to drool over him. He had a good public relationship with most of his colleagues and it is unsurprising that they have a lot of good things to say about him, even in his absence.
