The designer hand bag that the former First Lady of Anambra State, Margaret Obi, rocked on her 52nd birthday has continued to disrupt the Internet.

On September 9, 2026, a content creator and supporter of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Precious Oruche, aka Mama Pee, shared a video of Mrs Obi and her husband Peter Obi (former Anambra State governor and 2027 presidential candidate of the NDC), as she prepared to travel out of the country.

Mrs Obi rocked a Birkin Hermes bag and a luxurious hair as she shared lovey-dovey moments with her husband.

The video went viral and many people celebrated the birthday lady. However, some opponents of the politician assumed that the bag was worth N250m and they bashed the politician (who is known to display a frugal lifestyle) for allowing his wife to rock an expensive bag.

Lere Olayinka, a media aide to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesome Wike, tackled the presidential aspirant, and media personality Ifedayo Olarinde, aka Daddy Freeze, joined him.

However, several Nigerians have defended Mrs Obi’s choice of handbag including activist Justice Chidiebere, aka Justice Crack, and content creator Clinton Egbuna, aka KintonCod. Many people affirmed that Mr Obi is not a government official and his wife did not buy the bag with public funds.

Others noted that Obi has always been a rich man and his wife has her own businesses too. Besides, she always loves to look good and rock designer wears and jewelleries.

Another set of people asked those against Mrs Obi’s lifestyle to focus on the increasing poverty rate in the nation and the hike in fuel price. They noted that attention should be on the sitting president, Bola Tinubu, who has the mandated to lead the people, not someone who is not in power.

A content creator Michael Amanesi, aka Mc Lively, referred to Daddy Freeze’s video and corroborated his claim about Obi being a billionaire before he became a governor, however, the former accused the later of being an anonymous supporter of Tinubu for bashing Obi because of a mere hand bag.
